The Original Purpose of the Christian Movement

The Original Purpose of the Christian Movement

Part A. Why we at CtH seem so different

By Thomas Chavez

Over the course of twenty centuries, Christian teaching, for the most part, no matter which specific church or denomination you talk about, has sought to maintain a consistent image. Wanting 5to present a picture of unchanging truth. This is powerfully illustrated by the fact that in the 1860s the Pope, head of the Roman Catholic Church issued a declaration that Catholic doctrine has never changed and can never change, despite the simple fact that a close reading of history shows that Catholic doctrine has time and again tied itself into knots to go along with changes in emphasis, and function necessary for the church to answer issue after issue, with shifts in understanding in what the then-current power structure in the Vatican saw as most important, either spiritually or politically. What is more, that same Pope created a new doctrine that whatever a Pope said while speaking “ex-cathedra,” meaning in his official capacity, is always flat out infallible.

At Christ the Healer UCC we take a diametrically opposite tack. We have done everything that we could to unbury the original vision of Christ as shown in the words and actions of Jesus, and then have sought to understand that intention in the most attentive, detailed, and functional ways, so that we can do what Christ asked, and follow his way says Thomas Chavez.

That is where the difference starts. By realizing that we are directly asked to follow, we are never asked by Jesus himself to worship him. Jesus in fact related to, as his substitute for worship, his people’s image of the one and only God, whom he named, “Daddy.” So the first doctrinal shift was right there, the morphing of the religion “Of Jesus,” into the religion “About Jesus.

This bend in the path was more or less accidentally worn deep when the Apostle Paul, in his efforts to sell Jesus’s program to non-Jews, spent so much ink in his letters explaining why Jesus was so important. Furthermore, The Theology of Apostle Paul is divided into three, depending upon which Pauline letters a person might read. There was an original Paul totally dedicated to the image of a radically giving God revealed by Christ through Jesus. He said that in Christ there was no Greek nor Jew, meaning that there was no difference between tribes, nations, or races. No Male or female, no difference between the genders. No slave or free, meaning no difference between social classes. Contrast this with a reactionary Paul greatly concerned with the order within congregations, eager to make women shut up in church, submit to their husbands, have enslaved people meekly obey their masters, and so on. These letters when looked at carefully use language that the original Paul never used, and expressed views that the original Paul never hinted at. For long years these were called “Attributed,” now scholars are simply calling them forgeries. Then there is a third Paul, who seems from a doctrinal point of view to be suspended between the two. But when these letters are examined it turns out that when the few paragraphs of contrary material is removed, the rest of each letter flows along without a hitch. Showing that the regressive material was inserted into original texts. That is three changes right there. Then, the Early Desert Fathers had a theological take somewhat different from the Theology of Paul. Saint Augustine in the sixth century issued Theological opinions that became church doctrine that was an “An Advance,” on those views, then the late Middle Ages “Scholastics,” especially Thomas Aquinas, argued with, “Advanced and corrected” those doctrines, and Theology has evolved generation by generation ever since. Including the Protestant reformation and the subsequent splitting up of Protestants into hundreds of strands of Christian thought. All claiming to be the one, unchanging central understanding of the Gospels.

By sticking with, and clarifying what we see as the original purpose of the Christian movement, we at CtH feel that we have recovered the deep, founding momentum of what Christ as Jesus had in mind, and was determined first to work miracles to attract attention to; second, to give his life for, and third, becomes himself a jaw-dropping miracle of resurrection to hammer home. Because we have this incredibly powerful perspective, we are eager to invite anyone who is intrigued by the prospect of both personal and planetary transformation to check out what we teach, and climb on board. We welcome you with loving arms.

As Humanity Evolves and our Kin-dom of Heaven Project

Since 1997, CtH UCC has engaged in an annual Wesak ceremony. Wesak (Vesak) is a holiday traditionally observed mostly by Buddhists. CtH offers an annual meditation too. This an esoteric Christian tradition that invites Christ and Buddha to work together to bless the world to make spiritual progress one step further each year.

The mythic story involves a gathering in the high Himalayas for the bringing down of the new energies to serve the world, into a bowl of water. We follow that tradition providing our own bowl and allow that water to be charged.

This year, in particular, our ceremony took place entirely outdoors, and precisely at the moment of moon-rise, an entire tribe of coyotes began howling together. It was remarkable in that the hills and trees around made moonrise at the precise moment unobservable. And yet, the Coyotes were right on cue. This was also at the moment in which everyone globally was meditating at the same time!

Wesak Water Interpretation for 2024

Keep on keeping on

Deepening shadows have tempted the souls of the living who would reach for light to return ill for ill. Be not fooled, be not misled. Do not despair, regardless of appearances. You have the tools you need. Love the evildoers. Love yourself in all the mirrors.
Keep on keeping on in what appears to be, and may well be narrowing options for humanity.

“The seed of God is in us. Pear seeds grow into pear, trees, nut seeds grow into nut trees, and God seeds grow into God.” — Meister Eckhart.

Wesak Water Interpretation for 2023

See the whole long view for the past. See the whole wide view for the present, as the Soul sees. See why the mind/ego sees neither adequately. The personality, ego, body must be filled by Soul’s intention. Each decade, each year, more humans on earth understand the principle, but it is practice, not understanding which brings the change.

Practice accepting, letting go of organizing, directing, owning life and let Soul organize, direct and own. The Great Turning comes not from instruction and understanding, but from practice and experience. Help one another do what is necessary.

This time of trials continues, for even those who know the truth forget and “other”. Rise above the petty and love those who quarrel even with yourself. There is only our human selves to be overcome with unrelenting, unstinting, unreserved love. What separates must be loved more thoroughly, completely, from all angles.

We have the answer—but as long as we are parochial, we’re in our own way.

[Thomas says] “In terms of the large minority of people who get what’s necessary, we could be at the turning point of history, but it’s not through understanding that the turn is made. As many human beings as possible must love all that is, regardless of any other consideration.”

Wesak Water Interpretation for 2022

It’s time. This is our big opportunity. A giant opportunity to step up and practice unconditional love. As a species we are ill-prepared to do this. There are many wrongs revealed. Our long broken places are revealed to us as never before. Our opportunity is to stand aside from our long -standing lacks. We will look for blame, there is no blame. We will look for interference, none is to be found. We will look for ill will, there is no need. We will look for God’s disfavor that is not there. The excuses are waiting to be found in our own mind. We need not believe them. Only in being courageous do we overcome. No excuse, no blaming of outside interference will help.

Not only can we can do it but there is nothing to overcome but ourselves. It is simply that we are up against ourselves, especially the desire to find an excuse, someone to blame. Our shadow is showing up and now looks doubly deep. There is nobody to fight. We need not fight wrong. We bring love.

Wesak Water Interpretation for 2021

The light is yours to receive, yours to conduct, yours to focus, yours to share.

  • The light is not yours to keep, nor yours to own. Be the light.
  • Remember the light of love.
  • Weep for the darkness as light increases and darkness consciousness grows frantic, doing ever more which is wrong.

The greater the effort of the darkness, the deeper the plunge. So know in yourself compassion for evil as it intensifies. Dark brothers remain brothers. There are places where it’s getting worse because it’s getting better due to these frantic efforts.”

Wesak Water Interpretation for 2020

A coming year of humblest triumph. Foundations tremble in all quarters. Little collapses instantly, yet all power structures weaken. Power through oneness waxes. Power through force wanes, but gloat not. Tend the increase. In every human collection, this need holds. You have waited. This is a moment of greater inflection to the turning. Tend it tenderly everywhere. Only the light prevents the reversal of gains.

  • Oneness in light
  • Oneness of love
  • Oneness as power

It’s a tentative but huge hope. We have what we’ve been waiting for if we can keep it by not getting caught in gloating or fighting. A call to double down on being our best, because one piece of what has always been the coming disaster is upon us. It’s mitigated and we can come out better than before. But it’s never guaranteed.

Wesak Water Interpretation for 2019

This period of test no longer builds. But the consequences of what is built must now be flooded with light, with love, with open acceptance. Continue to regard the light and the light only.

A peak is reached. Glide is ahead. No worse comes. All that must be loved is already launched.

  • Love it fully.
  • Love it kindly.
  • Love it intensely.

The blessing is that we managed to hold enough light that we didn’t contribute to a new round of testing. We need to keep remembering the light to deal with the aftermath of what is already happening.

Wesak 2018 Remember the Light

Hold tight to courage. Let go of all rage, fear, despair. A tipping point is reached before Easter. Hold love.

  • Embrace oneness.
  • Accept what you find under all circumstances. This must be remembered every day, every hour of every day so that when the balance shifts, it shifts in love.
  • Fear nothing. Even the most unwelcome news is bad news only when you reject it. Do not be tricked by invitations to feel anguish. Those who give all to the light must remember the light.

It’s like the whole descent into the darkness we’ve been witnessing a little at a time for years is reaching its nadir. It gets worse; and if at the worst moment the would-be saintly, the lightworkers, catch the infection of fighting back, the darkness will win because there is nobody who is holding the light and those who would be good are fighting those who have already made that mistake.

The History of Religion

The History of Religion

History of religion and moving beyond

Religion is the way humans make sense of the experience of forces beyond their control and stories and practices that accumulate into a religious culture that can be passed down through generations. In early life, we attempted to save ourselves from these forces like the weather and animals. This resulted in many religions with their unique cultures, traditions, rules, dogmas and practices. These religions are attempts to describe “the light” we know in our hearts to be true through stories.

Rabbi Ariyeh Hirschfield, the founder of Congregation P’nai Or, a dear friend of Christ the Healer once said “The Jewish Prophets took all the light from the Torah and distilled it; Jesus distilled all the light from the prophets.” Spiritual evolution means we continue to distill the light we find. The light that we recognize, that illuminated all the spiritual yearning and cultures of all primitive humanity, that twinkles in all great religions, shines forth brilliantly in the great demonstration of Jesus of Nazareth who is at the center of history. This does not invalidate any other spiritualities because God is God by any name, and light is light, wherever you find it. Humans are one family or kin. This is why the members of Christ the Healer follow Jesus.

Shared unity of light and fundamental change

Many of us experienced faith and religion growing up that felt very dark and heavy. Often, this was due to a fundamentalist belief that we eventually abandoned this later in life. Or, our beliefs somehow feel limiting and we know there is something “more”. Christianity was born into the Greco Roman Culture of the Roman Empire which was much more realistic than Judaism and posited a divide between mind and body with the mind or spirit being the most important. This is why, for instance, some Christian traditions denigrate the body with extreme ascetical practices and teachings and also denigrate the value of nature, women, children, and animals. At Christ the Healer, we fundamentally believe in continuous growth and improvement, beyond our limitations and current understandings, ever-changing to become all that is Christ. The way of Christ is to hold all of these things together for wholeness in body, mind, and spirit. This means the body, the earth, and our higher spirituality.

One of the ways we can begin to grow and get unstuck is through a defined system that encompasses the installation of the mind, body, and spirit of Jesus which we have termed The Compass Way. By understanding what is happening in our bodies by the effects of our feelings, judgments, biases, and beliefs, we can begin to recognize those that serve us and connect us to the greater good. And we come to see how these things divide and hurt us. Then, we learn how to make new choices that unify, heal and help us and others grow.
